Port service

The Port of Umeå offers customized services and a well-developed infrastructure for efficient handling of goods, ships and transport, all year round.

The Port of Umeå is the gateway to and from the northern Nordic region. Here, shipping and land transport meet in well-developed intermodal transport chains. Modern cranes, large storage areas and access to both shore power and charging infrastructure make it possible to handle all types of goods – from forest products and containers to bulk, oil and project cargo.

The Port of Umeå has "ice-free" conditions all year round, which provides high availability and reliable flows. Its strategic location at the northern Kvarken provides quick access to both regional and international markets, and with a catchment and supply area that extends from northern Sweden into Finland and further towards Norway, the port plays an important role for the region's business community.

The Port of Umeå is operated by Kvarken Ports Umeå, which has full operational responsibility.

Fairway

The sailing time to the Port of Umeå is very short, only one hour from the Väktaren pilot station to the quay. The port has ice-free conditions all year round, which provides high availability and reliable flows.

The fairway currently has a maximum draft of 10.2 m and can accommodate vessels up to 215 m. Pilotage is mandatory for all vessels over 90 m, but we also recommend that shorter vessels use the service where local knowledge is lacking. The pilots have good knowledge of the fairway and other conditions - all to make arrival and departure as smooth and safe as possible.

Pilotage and towing services are provided by the Swedish Maritime Administration, which operates in the Port of Umeå.

Quays and surfaces

The Port of Umeå has several quays, which means many opportunities for you as a customer depending on the type of ship and cargo. We offer several different services connected to ship calls, all to streamline and make your stay in Umeå as smooth as possible.

Today, there are approximately 300,000 m² of open warehouse space in the port, which will increase to 490,000 m² after the ongoing expansion.

Intermodala transports

The Port of Umeå is built for a smooth transition between shipping and land transportation. Electrified tracks run from the port area all the way into central Umeå with connections to the Bothnia Line, the upcoming North Bothnia Line and the main line. In the middle of the port is an intermodal railway terminal with the aim of creating safe and environmentally beneficial flows further in Sweden, to Finland/Norway and out into Europe – with fewer transhipments and smoother lead times.

Safety and maritime protection

The Port of Umeå is an ISPS area and thus a protected area where access requires a special permit. If you need to stay in the area, an approved permit is required, which you apply for from Kvarken Ports Umeå External link., as well as approved training (e-learning).

The ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) regulations impose certain basic requirements such as conducting security assessments and security plans for port facilities and measures to prevent unauthorized access. All transports and other matters to the ports will be carried out exclusively via designated gates, where the matter must also be reported. Only authorized personnel will have access to these areas. Authorized personnel in this regard refers to persons who have received an identity or access card issued by Kvarken Ports Umeå, as well as crew members.

The Swedish Transport Agency, as the regulatory authority, has established and approved security assessments and security plans for the port of Umeå in accordance with the ISPS Code. Based on this, the port areas are considered a security area.
