Umeå fairway

With a catchment area that extends across parts of Sweden, Norway and Finland, the Port of Umeå is important for Umeå's role as a logistics hub in the northern Nordic region. To further strengthen the transport network where shipping, road, rail and air interact, the fairway to the Port of Umeå is now being developed in collaboration with the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The goal of the project is to improve accessibility to the port for larger and deeper vessels and to create better conditions for efficient and safe shipping.

Extent

The planned work consists of widening and deepening the fairway. This involves dredging work on approximately 240,000 square meters with a total volume of approximately 420,000 theoretical solid cubic meters. At the same time, the fairway markings in public fairways 730, 731 and 733 and in the nearby port area will be updated.

To increase the capacity of the port and create space for expanded storage areas, an infill of Foderviken on the western side and an area south of the Coast Guard operations on the eastern side are also planned. In addition, there are plans to apply to build a new pier that will be connected to the previously licensed energy quay.

The fairway is dimensioned to accommodate vessels with a length of up to approximately 245 meters, a width of 35 meters and a draft of 11 meters – without restrictions for night navigation. The minimum depth shall follow the Swedish Transport Agency's safety margin of 0.7 meters below the keel.
