The Port of Umeå is one of the largest ports in the northern Nordic region. Here, shipping, rail and road meet in intermodal transport chains that connect Sweden with Finland, Norway and the world. The port's strategic location, year-round operation and growing capacity makes it an engine for regional growth and international trade.
Northern Sweden is in a strong growth phase and the Port of Umeå has seen a sharp increase in cargo volumes over the past ten years. To meet the continous demands, the port's operating permit has been increased from 3 to 5 million tonnes. At the same time, an extensive renovation and expansion of the port is underway, further improving the possibilities for shipping via Umeå and strengthening the city's role as the region's transport hub.
The Port of Umeå is Sweden's northernmost port that can be considered ice-free all year round. The port's catchment area extends from Sundsvall in the south to Kiruna in the north, further east into Finland and across to Norway in the west. The strategic location at the narrowest part of the Gulf of Bothnia provides quick access to Vaasa and further towards Eastern Europe and Asia via the so-called floating E12, while good road and rail connections make it easy to transport goods westwards towards the Norwegian Atlantic ports and northwards and southwards towards Europe.
The Port of Umeå handles all types of goods and project cargo, although the majority of goods consist of forest industry products. The port is integrated with the city's other logistics facilities through roads and rail. The intermodal rail terminal in the port area provides direct connection to the Bothnia Line, the main line and the upcoming Northbothnia Line, which means that goods can be quickly and smoothly moved between modes of transport without time-consuming reloading - an important advantage for both regional industry and international flows.

Wasaline operates the floating E12 with the ship Aurora Botnia between Umeå and Vaasa. It has been running on fossil-free fuel since August 2025, which means that the international Green Shipping Corridor between Umeå and Vaasa is now in operation. The next project is to measure CO2-emissions in the port in order to reduce emissions there as well and thus extend the Green Shipping Corridor.
As a designated Comprehensive port in the EU's strategic network (TEN-T), the Port of Umeå has an importance that extends beyond its own region. It is considered to have strategic importance for the EU's internal market and is part of the work for competitiveness and sustainable transport solutions in the future.
Umeå is also on the Swedish Armed Forces' maps as a strategic logistical node, of which the port is an important part. A high-capacity rail connection between the port and the overall network is therefore crucial – something that is in line with the EU's intentions for the strategic ports.
