The Port of Umeå is growing to meet the needs of the future. Through strategic construction and development projects, we are strengthening our role as a hub for trade, transport and sustainable logistics.
The Port of Umeå is a central hub for freight flows in the northern Nordic region. Large parts of the region's imports and exports pass through here before being transported further via sea, rail or road. To meet the increased demand, intensive work is now underway to upgrade the port to be able to handle larger volumes of goods more efficiently and prepare the port for future fuels and logistics solutions.
The Port of Umeå is in the midst of a multi-year development period that will secure capacity for future needs. The work includes, among other things, the creation of new land areas, new and reconstruction of quay facilities with associated technology, the construction of additional warehouse and storage buildings, and improvements to the fairway to accommodate more and larger ships.
Several projects have already been completed, such as a railway terminal, an expanded ferry terminal with a new passenger corridor and expanded operational areas for customs, police, ferry traffic and storage.
In addition to the physical constructions, the Port of Umeå participates in several research and innovation collaborations with the goal of contributing to the sustainable development of shipping. New logistics solutions are being developed, the function and capacity of the ports are being improved, and operations are being adapted to meet future demands regarding efficiency and environmental performance.
